A winnower was used to separate the wheat grains from the chaff.

Winnowers were used alongside strippers, which cut and thresh the grain, before the new ‘combine harvester’ was developed.

In February 1830 William Archer met a Mr Sinclair ‘on the Plain’ and offered to lend him a fly wheel or winnowing machine.
