The scythe was used to cut grass or grains during harvesting. It was held by the sned (handle), and the blade was dragged across the ground.
In November 1829 there were three new scythes fitted up for the mowers. Over the next few days a team of four convicts — including Paget, who had been given one of the old scythes — was at work cutting down oats including some that had self-sown.
