Thorpe was sentenced to 14 years for house breaking. Like a number of others, he was first punished for being drunk and not proceeding to his master’s house, for which he received 25 lashes. He absconded twice — the first time, he received 50 lashes; the second, he was sent to 2 years hard labour with the time added to his 14 year sentence.

Archer complained of Thorpe often ‘complaining’, ‘still lying by’, or being sick. Once he caught Thorpe ‘going towards the barn smoking [and] took his pipe away’. Thorpe spent time fencing, and making new rake heads. When he was sick in he was given ‘calonel and salts’ from the doctor.
