Prior to being transported for stealing, Bracer had already been once tried and acquitted for picking pockets. He noted that ‘I was out of work 3 months.’ Bracer was put to work at William Archer’s sorting potatoes, hoeing wheat, and doing other odd jobs. In he received a pass to see the doctor, but ‘Dr Paton dismissed [him] without medicine or any direction except that he thought the magistrate was more fit for [him] than the doctor.’ He was reported a number of times for neglect and disobedience, and Archer also noted that he was ‘saucy for his tobacco and threatens leaving.’

Soon after, Bracer was reported for assaulting a fellow convict, Mackay, and was sent to the Police Office for 25 lashes. Upon his return, Archer noted that Bracer ‘kept to the hut and refused to do anything.’ Bracer married Mary Ann English in Launceston in , and the record of the marriage notes him as being a blacksmith. In he received his conditional pardon.
