Sentenced to 14 years for stealing a lamb, Woodley was initially given 25 lashes for ‘not proceeding to the residence of his master’ [William Archer]. After that, he was largely working in drainage, sowing furrows, hoeing wheat, and mowing. He was given another 50 lashes in for disobedience of orders. Archer noted that in Woodley and others were ‘all of them dissatisfied with their allowances or rations.’ In Woodley received a new pair of shoes.

Woodley became free in and became a farmer. He first applied to marry Margaret Watson and later, in at the age of 65, he married Ann Price, a widow.
